Klein Kooperasie Blog Post - Natural Pest Control

Summer brings sunshine, warm breezes, and unfortunately, unwelcome insects. Citronella candles and chemical-laden sprays can be effective, but they’re not always the healthiest or most environmentally friendly option.

Fortunately, there are a variety of natural ingredients you can use to create safe and effective insect repellents for your home and garden. These DIY solutions are perfect for those looking for a more natural approach to pest control!

Natural Repellent Ingredients:

  • Essential Oils: Certain essential oils, such as citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, and clove, have natural insect-repelling properties. These oils can be used directly in a diffuser or diluted in a spray bottle for topical application.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar deters many insects. You can use a solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle to repel ants, flies, and other crawling insects.
  • Diatomaceous Earth (DE): This powder, made from fossilized algae, is a desiccant that dries out the exoskeletons of insects, killing them. Important safety note: Only use food-grade DE and avoid inhaling the dust.
  • Garlic and Pepper Sprays: The strong smell of garlic and pepper can deter many insects. You can create a spray by steeping chopped garlic or chili peppers in water and then straining the liquid.

DIY Insect Repellent Recipes:

1. Citronella Spray:

  • 10 drops citronella essential oil
  • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Witch hazel (optional – adds a pleasant scent)

Mix the essential oils and witch hazel (if using) in a spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake well before use. Spray on skin or clothing, avoiding contact with eyes and mouth. Reapply every few hours, especially after sweating or swimming.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Spray:

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup water

Combine the apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Shake well and use to repel ants, flies, and other crawling insects.

3. Diatomaceous Earth Powder:

  • Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth

Sprinkle DE powder around areas where you see insect activity, such as doorways, cracks in walls, and around pet food bowls. Be sure to reapply DE powder after it rains or gets wet.

4. Garlic Pepper Spray:

  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 4 cups water

Boil the garlic and pepper in water for 15 minutes. Let the mixture cool completely, then strain the liquid into a spray bottle. Spray on surfaces or around plants to deter insects.

Tips for Using Natural Insect Repellents:

  • Reapply natural repellents more frequently than chemical repellents, as they tend to break down faster.
  • Combine different natural repellents for a more effective defense.
  • Natural repellents may not be as effective against all insects.
  • Be sure to test any new repellent on a small area of skin before applying it liberally.
