๐พ Planting Instructions for Lucerne Seeds
1. Soil Preparation:
Lucerne grows best in well-drained, fertile soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Remove weeds and loosen the soil to create a fine, firm seedbed.
If possible, add lime and phosphate fertilizer before planting to encourage strong root growth.
2. Seed Rate:
Use about 20โ25 kg of seed per hectare (or ยฑ2โ2.5 kg per 1,000 mยฒ) depending on soil and rainfall.
3. Planting Depth:
Sow seeds 1โ2 cm deep.
Do not plant too deep, as lucerne seedlings are small and delicate.
4. Planting Method:
Can be broadcast evenly by hand or drilled in rows about 15โ20 cm apart.
Roll or lightly compact the soil after sowing to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
5. Watering:
Requires consistent moisture during germination (7โ14 days).
Once established, lucerne is drought-resistant due to its deep taproot.
6. Maintenance:
Keep weeds under control, especially during early growth.
Apply fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium as needed.
7. Harvesting:
Can be cut 3โ6 times per year, depending on rainfall and growth.
Cut when plants start to flower for the best balance of nutrition and yield.
๐ฎ Uses of Lucerne
Animal Feed: Excellent source of protein, fiber, and vitamins for cattle, horses, goats, and sheep.
Hay Production: Commonly dried and baled as high-quality lucerne hay.
Silage or Pellets: Can be processed into silage or lucerne pellets for long-term feed storage.
Soil Improvement: Acts as a natural soil enricher, fixing nitrogen and improving fertility for future crops.
